DVIDS – News – CSG 7 Sailor receives Copernicus Award
YOKOSUKA, Japan – Lt. Corey Grey, from Kissimmee, Florida, assigned to Commander, Submarine Group (CSG) 7, was one of 25 recipients of the fiscal year 2022 Copernicus Award, announced in NAVADMIN 24/23, released Feb. 2.
The Copernicus Award was established in 1997 to recognize individual contributions to naval warfare in Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I), Information Systems, Cyber Operations, and Information Warfare. Those nominated for the award are reviewed by a board of judges based upon superior performance, exceptional initiative, leadership and insight within the nominee’s area of expertise.
“It’s an amazing feeling to be nominated and confirmed for this award,” said Grey. “The award has a rich history with my community and I’m extremely fortunate to be a recipient.”
As the Cryptologic Resource Coordinator (CRC) for CSG 7, Grey is responsible for delivering signals intelligence (SIGINT) support, C4I Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities, and electronic warfare competence to fleet, joint, and national commanders.
“Cryptology and submarining are very closely linked and my job helps to unify them both,” said Grey. “There is no greater honor than supporting our underway teams as they engage in arduous tasking.”
Grey oversaw the work of over 250 Information Warfare Professionals in the largest and most challenging area of operations in the submarine force.
“This is an awesome staff with a critical mission set,” said Grey. “There are some exceptional officers and enlisted personnel at CSG7 and I’m honored to receive this award.”
Grey’s portfolio encompasses information operations throughout the entire United States Indo-Pacific Command area of operations.
“Lt. Grey has done tremendous work since the day he checked into the command,” said Cmdr. Derrick Thomas, CSG 7 maritime intelligence operations center director (N2). “He has consistently performed above standards, has been a critical leader within the department and an example of the excellence the Information Warfare community brings to any fight. I am happy his talent and work was recognized by his being named a Copernicus Award recipient!”
The Copernicus Award is sponsored by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) International and the United States Naval Institute and presented to civilians and service members of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard who demonstrate exceptional initiative, leadership and insight within the selectee’s area of expertise.
Grey will be in attendance for the presentation of his award at the AFCEA International/USNI WEST 2023 Conference, Feb. 14 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California.
Submarine Group 7 directs forward-deployed, combat capable forces across the full spectrum of undersea warfare throughout the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Sea.
