MilVet Angels Welcomes William Crowell to Advisory Board
SAN FRANCISCO, March 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — MilVet Angels, a network of military veteran families and former public service leaders supporting the next generation of technology companies, announced today that former Deputy Director of the National Security Agency (NSA), William “Bill” Crowell, has joined its Advisory Board.
“I look forward to supporting MilVet Angels in its mission to engage outstanding civil servants and military veterans in the innovation economy,” said Crowell. “As we back the next generation of companies dedicated to strengthening our nation and advancing democratic values around the world, I am eager to contribute meaningfully and help drive impact.”
Crowell served as Deputy Director of the NSA from 1994 to 1997—the highest position a civilian can hold within the agency. In the role, he acted as the agency’s chief operating officer, overseeing all operations and policy. Before becoming Deputy Director, Crowell was the NSA’s Chief of Staff from 1990 to 1991—assuming the position just days before the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. He later served as Deputy Director for Operations from 1991 to 1994, where he led the NSA’s global signals intelligence mission.
He is currently an Operating Partner at Brave Capital, having joined after beginning his investment career as a Partner at Alsop Louie Partners. Before entering venture capital, he was CEO of Cylink Corporation, a publicly traded company and a leading provider of e-business security solutions. He has also served as chairman or board director for multiple cybersecurity companies that achieved successful exits.
“Bill brings decades of experience in supporting the armed services and intelligence agencies, ensuring their operations are prepared for the future,” said Ernestine Fu Mak, Co-founder of MilVet Angels. “His deep expertise in emerging technologies, cybersecurity, and national security will be invaluable as we continue to support innovative companies tackling the most pressing challenges facing our society.”
Among other accomplishments, Crowell has been honored with awards including the National Security Medal, National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Intelligence Agency Director’s Award, Federal Bureau of Investigation Distinguished Service Award, and the Distinguished Executive Presidential Rank Award. He has served as Chairman of the Director of National Intelligence Senior Advisory Group, a board member of the Open-Source Election Technology Institute and the Markle Foundation Task Force, and an advisor to the Entanglement Institute.
Crowell joins Sue Gordon and Hondo Geurts on the MilVet Angels Advisory Board, further strengthening the board’s decades of government and leadership experience. Gordon previously served as the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence following a distinguished career at the Central Intelligence Agency, while Geurts served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition after a notable tenure with U.S. Special Operations Command.
