DVIDS – News – Indiana National Guard opens renovated Martinsville Armory
MARTINSVILLE – The Indiana National Guard leadership reopened the Martinsville Armory following its first renovations since the building’s construction in 1958 during a ribbon-cutting ceremony today.
The facility supports training, administration and logistics for Hoosier Guardsmen and helps ensure their readiness to assist the state and nation.
“It’s important to recognize that these armories are an important aspect to the National Guard’s unique dual state and federal mission,” said Indiana’s Adjutant General Brig. Gen. Larry Muennich. “When disaster strikes here at home, whether it’s a tornado, floods, or a pandemic, the National Guard is always ready to respond at a moment’s notice. These armories enable that response. In just the last five years, more than 6,500 Indiana National Guardsmen have been activated to support the State of Indiana in a diverse array of missions.”
The armory originally covered 18,000 square feet and has been expanded to 21,000 square feet. The renovation updated restrooms, showers, mechanical systems and the building’s exterior, which includes new lighting, fencing and expanded parking.
The $7.6 million project was funded by federal and state resources. It also brought the armory up to current code requirements and industry standards. Construction began in November 2023 and was completed on schedule.
Indiana National Guard soldiers from the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s Company B, 1st Battalion, 151st Infantry Regiment, use the Martinsville armory for training and operations. The space is also available to the community for events and recruiting efforts.
The renovation is part of a 20-year modernization plan to provide state-of-the-art facilities for Indiana Guardsmen to carry out their daily duties and training as part of the modern force.
