DVIDS – News – 36th Wing hosts inaugural Battle of the Branches shooting competition
ANDERSEN AFB, Guam – The 36th Wing designed and hosted an inaugural shooting competition for all military branches and local law enforcement here, Friday, Nov. 22, 2024.
“This is the first time in history an event like this is happening on the island and it is something we want to happen annually,” said Staff Sgt. Christopher Camat-Crisostomo, 36th Security Forces Squadron Combat Arms instructor and Battle of the Branches point of contact.
28 representatives were divided into seven teams based on their branch. The U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Army; along with Guam Army and Air National Guard and Guam Police Department, demonstrated their individual and cohesive abilities in an effort to claim the title and trophy as the, “Battle of the Branches Champion.”
“There are nine different drills in the course designed to challenge their marksmanship skills as well as their physical fitness,” said Camat-Crisostomo.
Speed and accuracy were the deciding factors in choosing the winner. Each team was graded based on the total time it took to compete the course as a team divided by the total amount of hits on target.
The Guam Police Department proved themselves to be the overall winner, claiming the title of the 2024 Battle of the Branches Champion, followed by the 36th Security Forces Squadron and the U.S. Army who came in second and third place.
“It’s good-spirited competition between the services so we can talk a little trash,” said Brig. Gen. Thomas B. Palenske, commander of the 36th Wing.
The competition was inspired by Palenske who sought a fun and cohesive event between all branches, military and civilian on island.
“It’s an opportunity to hone in on our warfighting skills as we prepare to execute the Pacing OPLAN,” said Palenske. “We should never miss an opportunity to do that.”
