ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Feb. 17, 2023) Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announces that an academic building at the U.S. Naval Academy will be renamed “Carter Hall” for former President Jimmy Carter during a ceremony in Mahan Hall. The building houses the political science and languages & cultures departments. Carter is a 1947 USNA graduate, served as 39th President of the United States, and is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The name change from Maury Hall is a result of the recommendation by the Congressional Naming Commission, which provided recommendations for all Department of Defense items that commemorate the Confederate States of America or any person who served voluntarily with the CSA. Matthew Fontaine Maury, an early oceanographer and one-time director of the Naval Observatory, joined the Confederacy during the Civil War. (U.S. Navy photo by Stacy Godfrey)
