HOUSTON– Personnel Specialist 1st Class Mikayla Cook, a native of Sacramento, California, has built a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy Reserve as full-time support since enlisting in 2016. Now serving at Navy Reserve Center (NRC) Houston, Cook has embraced the challenges of military service, rising to the role of lead petty officer (LPO) in her department.

“I was looking for a fresh challenge and was curious to see what the Navy had in store,” said Cook, reflecting on her decision to enlist.

As a personnel specialist, Cook plays a vital role in pay administration, record management, and personnel support for Sailors.

“My responsibilities include assisting Sailors with pay and benefits, coordinating transfers and retirements, and ensuring that both Sailors and their families receive the support they need,” Cook explained. “It’s crucial because it allows service members to focus on their mission without unnecessary stress.”

Cook credits her strong work ethic, discipline, and adaptability, traits she feels were instilled during her upbringing in Sacramento, as the keys to her success in the Navy.

“The Navy is a dynamic environment that requires flexibility and resilience,” Cook said. “The lessons I learned early in life have helped me navigate my career and adjust to new challenges.”

Her dedication and perseverance led her to achieve the significant milestone of earning the Expeditionary Warfare Specialist (EXW) qualification, a distinction that reflects her commitment to operational readiness.

“It was challenging, but I’m incredibly proud of the dedication and effort I put into studying and successfully passing the qualification boards,” she said.

For Cook, serving in the Navy is about more than just a job— it’s about purpose, commitment, and being part of something greater than herself.

“Serving in the Navy means contributing to something bigger than myself, protecting freedom and being part of a team that’s always ready to face any challenge,” Cook shared.

She also highlights the personal growth and relationships she has built throughout her service.

“The Navy has given me the opportunity to grow, learn, and form lasting bonds with people who share the same dedication to service,” she said.

Looking back on her journey, Cook expresses gratitude to those who helped shape her career, particularly her recruiter, Petty Officer 1st Class Dione Davis.

“She showed me what the Navy had to offer, guided me through the enlistment process, and helped me realize I was capable of becoming a Sailor and so much more,” Cook said. “Even after I joined, she continued to support and mentor me.”

When asked what being a warfighter means to her, Cook emphasized readiness and adaptability.

“As a warfighter, readiness means being fully prepared physically, mentally, and strategically to respond to any challenge; ensuring we can execute missions with precision and adapt to evolving demands,” she said.

Now stationed in Houston, Cook continues to serve as a leader and mentor to junior Sailors at NRC Houston, embodying the values of honor, courage, and commitment in everything she does.
