DVIDS – News – Puerto Rican Sailor Finds Purpose in Guiding the Next Generation
MERIDIAN, Miss. — Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Anjel Varela Jr., a native of Moca, Puerto Rico, who previously was assigned to Navy Reserve Center Meridian, in Mississippi, has dedicated his career to service, mentorship, and readiness, embodying the core values of the U.S. Navy.
Varela first enlisted in the Navy in 2015, driven by a lifelong desire to serve his country. After initially serving active duty, he took a brief break in service before returning as a Selected Reservist providing part-time support. But eager to serve full-time again, he became a Training and Administration of the Reserve (TAR) Sailor where he again provides full-time support, this time in support of the Navy Reserve. He currently serves as a leader and mentor at Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron 6 (MSRON-6), helping junior Sailors develop the skills they need to advance in their careers.
“I come from a place where pride, hard work, and a strong sense of community are valued by everyone,” Varela said. “That background has had a massive impact on who I am.”
As a boatswain’s mate, Varela plays a critical role in the Navy’s fleet, ensuring the maintenance and operation of both ships and small boats. His leadership extends beyond technical proficiency—he takes pride in watching junior Sailors succeed and advance in their careers.
“Watching junior Sailors grow and continue to serve our country is my proudest accomplishment,” Varela said.
Vice Adm. Nancy Lacore, commander, Navy Reserve Force, underscored the importance of creating an environment where Sailors can thrive while balancing the demands of military and personal life.
“We will respect the multitude of demands placed on our Reserve Sailors and find ways to make the drilling experience simpler and more effective,” Lacore said.
Varela’s journey reflects this philosophy, as he not only hones his own skills but actively invests in the next generation of warfighters, ensuring that they are prepared to meet the challenges of the Navy’s mission.
For Varela, service is more than just a career—it is a lifelong commitment to ensuring global security and maritime freedom.
“The Navy is where I belong, and to me, it means I get to be a part of a legacy that will continue to keep the world’s oceans safe and free for commerce and travel,” Varela said. “That benefits people everywhere while ensuring the future for the next generations to come.”
His dedication to service is matched by the unwavering support of his family. As he prepares for the next chapter of his career and life as a new father, Varela acknowledges the sacrifices his loved ones have made.
“My wife Jess and our son have been my biggest supporters,” he said. “Their understanding and support have helped me to be the best husband, father, and Sailor that I can be.”
Varela embodies this spirit of readiness, a principle he defines as “always being accepting of challenges, change, and opportunities to grow and help those in need.”
As he embraces his new role as a TAR Sailor, Varela leaves behind a lasting impact on the Sailors he has trained and mentored. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to excellence continue to strengthen the force, ensuring the Navy remains ready for any challenge ahead.
