CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti – The 606th Air Control Squadron officially assumed its role as the control and reporting center for the Horn of Africa airspace from Marine Air Control Squadron 2’s Tactical Air Operations Center during a transfer of authority ceremony at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, on Nov. 4, 2024.

This transfer of authority begins a new chapter in the ongoing mission to provide crucial 24/7 aerial surveillance in support of Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA). The ceremony recognized the achievements of MACS-2 and set expectations for the future as the 606th ACS takes command.

“The TAOC has been vigilant in maintaining a constant watch over the skies above our forces and partners in the region,” said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Brian T. Cashman, commanding general of CJTF-HOA. “As we mark this transition, I want to express my deepest gratitude to Capt. Justice and the Marines of the TAOC for their hard work, dedication, and contribution to our mission here in East Africa.”

During their deployment, MACS-2 provided subject matter expertise and assisted in developing and establishing the integrated air and missile defense system for the Djibouti base cluster. They also provided white cell support for 80 simulated events, resulting in over 40 hours of training in support of the CJ7 validation requirements.

“Throughout our time here, the Marines worked 24/7 doing what they do best,” said U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Geoffrey Justice, commander of MACS-2 TAOC. “Thanks again, General Cashman, for the opportunity, but we are excited to get back to North Carolina.”

The incoming 606th Air Control Squadron, based at Aviano Air Base, Italy, is eager to continue the vital support needed for CJTF-HOA’s operations.

“I would like to thank Capt. Justice and the entire MACS-2 team, who have provided us with unwavering support since we first arrived in the country,” said Maj. Joseph Drexler, commander of the 606th ACS. “You laid the foundation for us, and we hope to emulate your successes.”
