DVIDS – News – Walter Reed ‘flips the switch’ and welcomes MHS GENESIS
Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, welcoming MHS GENESIS, the Department of Defense’s (DOD) new electronic health record (EHR) for the Military Health System.
MHS GENESIS is being implemented across the Military Health System, replacing the TRICARE Online Patient Portal, providing beneficiaries with direct access to their medical records and the ability to communicate with their health care provider from anywhere at any time.
As the Walter Reed staff becomes acclimated with MHS GENESIS and adjust to new workflows, there will be a reduction in available appointments and inpatient bed capacity; however, beneficiaries will still have access to care.
“The National Capital Region Market is excited about our new electronic health record platform and is committed to ensuring access to care for all of our beneficiaries,” said U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Anne M. Swap, NCR director. “Our in-network partners are aware of the temporary reduction of available appointments during the launch and will assist us during this initial adjustment period.”
In a statement released last week, U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Norman S. West, director of Staff, Defense Health Agency, shared, “The DHA’s transition to this new electronic health record improves not only the day-to-day care for our 9.6 million beneficiaries but also further positions the DHA’s role as a combat support agency. From a readiness perspective, MHS GENESIS provides a single connection for medical and dental information from the point of injury to the military hospital or clinic.”
The implementation of MHS GENESIS at Walter Reed is a significant milestone in the modernization of military healthcare. With the latest technology, the system eases the burden on healthcare professionals, enabling them to prioritize providing high-quality care to military personnel, veterans, and families continuously.
